For those of us growing up in the early 70's, the Rolling Stones lyrics of "wild, wild horses ... couldn't drag me away", will now resonate in your head for the day. :)
But, let me tell you a story ... about a horse named Ed ... OK I will stop!
Seriously now ... the story of the beautiful wild horses of Corolla on the Outer Banks is fascinating. In the early 1800's a Spanish ship hit a sand bar and in order to raise the ship so that it could move off the bar, they needed to eliminate weight .... and the horses on board where sent overboard. These horses in the pictures are direct decedents of the horses in the story! Today, these horses are protected and adored.
The ride out from the paved road of the island to the dunes of the wild horses was a wild, windy and exhilarating ride! Only 4 wheel drive vehicles are allowed beyond the gate ... and with good reason.
The sand and the dunes are captivating ... and lure you in with a promise of the unusual.
Miles up the beach, we had our first moments that resonated with the beauty and peacefulness of the raw beauty of these animals.
I was ever so grateful for our driver who actually lives in this area and easily maneuvered the sand and the dunes ... and guided us to the horses.
And, how about this! Horses in your garage! They are free to roam wherever they want. Guess it was a little to hot out in the sun for these guys!
Shooting over the top of the truck, I couldn't help but want to capture the simple beauty of this moment.
Suddenly, we were off again to another location that had been radioed between the drivers ... dad, mom and baby are at location XXXX (god only knows how they know where they are talking about ... (not a street sign that I could find) ... and there they were ... another garage story!
Hours later, we turned back ... but I will never forget ....such an experience.
Wild, wild horses ... couldn't drag me away .....
